Been somewhere amazing you’d never even heard of? You want to let your buddies in on the secret, right? Read on for my top travel gems!
What’s interesting about travel is that the places / hotels / restaurants that everyone agrees are fantastic, are often not so fantastic.
And even if they are, it can all be a bit predictable.
Now what’s really fun is when you find somewhere obscure that is truly out of this world.
You can’t believe your luck to have stumbled across this travel gem. How could you not have heard of this place before??
You want to shout it from the rooftops.
So here goes… these are My 3 Best Kept Travel Secrets
1. Koufonisia, Greece

We all know about Mykonos, Ios and Santorini but there are 100’s of Greek islands that you won’t have even heard of.
Koufonisia, in the Cyclades group is probably one of the most relaxing places I have ever been.
There’s literally hardly anything there apart from a few guest houses, deserted coves and clear turquoise sea.
3 reasons to go to Koufonisia:
– It’s an amazingly quiet place
– You can sunbathe naked in your own private cove
– There’s only one restaurant.. a boat ride away, pretty cool!
2. Little Bay Restaurant, London

Dining out when traveling can make a big dent in your budget.
And London restaurants are notorious for serving up over-priced food of dubious quality.
So what a delight to find a restaurant that offers excellent dishes at very, very good prices.
3 reasons to eat at Little Bay:
– The food is extremely tasty
– It’s cheap
– You can sit in cool, balcony tables
3. Magnetic Island, Australia

Magnetic Island in Queensland, Australia is a tropical paradise, a great place to come for a vacation but what struck me was that there didn’t seem to be anyone there?!
In fact, apart from a hand full of other travelers, the place was pretty empty.
Why hadn’t I heard of Magnetic Island before? Why wasn’t the place swamped by tourists?
All very mysterious but what a find!
3 reasons to go to Magnetic Island:
– The beaches are stunning
– You can drive around the island in a golf buggy, so much fun!
– There’s hardly anyone else there
So, there you have it, those are my 3 Best Kept Travel Secrets.

i want to go!!
You’ve got some nice places on here. Hadn’t heard from them. That’s probably why they’re travel secrets ;-) Thanks for sharing!
Very cool post! I’m especially attracted to the Greek island.
Noted! Greece… thank you!
one best kept secret : Austin Java [the original location at 12th and Lamar] in Austin, Texas
3 reasons: tast inexpensive food that leans toward healthy while including cakes and burgers; a relaxed vibe away from the main hipster and jock spots in town, where hipsters, jocks, academics, and travelers are all equally welcome; you can linger over great conversation — or reading a book — and not feel rushed
Koufonisia looks amazing. Hadn’t heard about that island before. Thanks for nominating me by the way. I will share three of my travel gems on Wednesday.
Great, look forward to seeing them!
Ack! Don’t tell about Magnetic Island! That’s our best kept secret in Australia and we don’t want people heading over there. Really, though, it is such a phenomenal place. And, you didn’t list the number 1 reason to go there: the koala sightings. Apart from the gorgeous sunsets, the koalas in the wild made the whole trip to Magnetic Island well worth it. (In case you’re curious, here are our pics and a post all about the koalas we saw on Magnetic Island – two babies and a mother! http://www.theroadforks.com/worldtrip/australia/koala_love_magnetic_island )
Great pics Akila, thanks for sharing! (and sorry for letting the secret out)!!

I’ve been to Magnetic Island in Australia and literally “There’s hardly anyone else there” just what you’ve said. It’s great because you almost feel like you own the place.
Ah to share or not to share… maybe secret decoder rings to unlook the secrets to 1st 100 ? Twitter is definitely not secret friendly… But I’m looking forward to hearing more. Thanks for sharing… great idea. LG

Wow check out that water!! Don’t know if I’d rather dive in or stay out so not to spoil its unbelievable beauty :P Just been on some Turkey holidays and the water in Bodrum is nowhere near that gorgeous. The beaches there are also PACKED. Packed like you get extra layers of suncream from rubbing shoulders with the person next to you. I’ve heard that most of Turkey is like that?
Thanks for sharing this travel secret! The most interesting about travel is that the places / hotels / restaurants that everyone agrees are fantastic, are often not so fantastic.
Man, I feel like I’ve been living under a rock… I am JUST finding out about this awesomeness NOW!???

Thanks heaps for some awesome destination tips. Cheers, Fred
Breathtaking…well written. Sure the photos are always nice to look at as reminders about what you’ve accomplished, but I’ve always found that I value the impact travel has on me personally far more than the photos I’ve taken.
Katie,
Thanks for sharing the information about Magnetic Island! Maybe those of us commenting should share calendars to insure each of us truly has the island to ourselves :) This winter, Magnetic Island!
